Letter From The President of The Charlotte Hornets Fred Whitfield about NBA All Star Weekend Charlotte 2017

As a valued Hornets fan, we wanted to make you aware of the NBA’s announcement today that Charlotte will no longer be hosting the 2017 All-Star Game in February. While we are disappointed by this decision, we understand the challenges around having All-Star Weekend in Charlotte this season and we are grateful that the league has provided an opportunity for us to host the event in the next available season in 2019.

We have worked closely with the NBA throughout this process. The goal for everyone involved was to keep the game in Charlotte and there was an exhaustive effort by all parties to do so. Hosting All-Star Weekend would have had a significant impact on the City of Charlotte. Along with the financial impact coming from the thousands of visitors that would have attended the event, we would also have had the ability to showcase our city to millions of NBA fans around the globe, all of whom would be potential visitors and tourists in the future. While we are saddened that we will miss this tremendous opportunity, we are pleased that the NBA has opened the door for it to return to us in just two years.

We would not have been able to secure All-Star Weekend without the backing we have received from all areas, including local government, the business community, our corporate partners and, of course, our fans. We greatly appreciate the support we have gotten so far and are confident that these groups will be just as enthusiastic as we move ahead to hosting All-Star 2019.

As an organization, we are preparing for the 2016-17 NBA season. Last year was both exciting and successful as we won 48 games, made the playoffs for the second time in three seasons and enjoyed a tremendous atmosphere at Time Warner Cable Arena thanks to the highest attendance and most sellouts since the NBA returned to Charlotte in 2004. After another strong offseason, we will look to build on this momentum in the coming season.

Thank you for your continued loyalty and support.
